Indoor Cables Frequently Asked Questions

+ What are the main ratings for ScaleFibre indoor cables?
Our SlimCORE™ range is available in several fire-rated jackets to meet local building codes: OFNR (Optical Fiber Nonconductive Riser) for vertical shafts between floors, and OFNP (Optical Fiber Nonconductive Plenum) for air-handling spaces where fire resistance and low smoke are critical. For projects in regions following European standards, we also provide CPR-rated cables. In other regions, we provide LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) jackets with IEC ratings.
+ What is CPR and what do the ratings like B2ca and Cca mean?
The Construction Products Regulation (CPR) is a European standard that classifies how cables react to fire. Cca is a common requirement for commercial buildings, offering reduced fire spread and heat release. B2ca is a higher ‘Euroclass’ rating required for high-risk environments like hospitals or airports. These ratings also include sub-classifications for smoke (s), flaming droplets (d), and acidity (a), ensuring comprehensive safety in a fire event.
+ How does LSZH differ from standard PVC or Riser-rated cables?
LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) refers to the material of the jacket rather than just a fire test. Unlike standard PVC, which releases dense black smoke and toxic halogen acid gases when burned, LSZH cables emit very limited smoke and no halogens. This makes them a safe choice for confined spaces, data centers, and public transport facilities where human life and sensitive electronics must be protected.
+ Can I use ScaleFibre indoor cables for outdoor applications?
Generally, no. Standard indoor cables are not UV-stabilized and lack water-blocking features, meaning the jacket will degrade and the fiber will fail if exposed to sunlight or moisture. However, we offer a number of Indoor/Outdoor cables, including our TightBEND™ series. These feature a LSZH jacket and water blocking, that allows for short outdoor runs (such as between buildings) while still being compliant for internal riser use.
+ Can I run an OFNR (Riser) cable in a Plenum space?
No. While you can use a higher-rated cable in a lower-rated area (e.g., using an OFNP Plenum cable in a Riser shaft), you cannot use an OFNR Riser cable in a Plenum space. Plenum areas have higher airflow and require the superior flame-retardant and smoke-extinguishing properties of an OFNP-rated cable to prevent the spread of fire through the HVAC system.
+ What makes SlimCORE™ cables ideal for data centers and high-density applications?
SlimCORE™ is engineered to maximize ROI in data center infrastructure. By utilizing G.657.A1 bend-insensitive fiber and an ultra-compact jacket, it significantly minimizes tray occupancy and allows for routing in much smaller radii. This reduces the need for oversized pathway investments, allows for smaller wall penetrations, and prevents signal loss in congested rack environments.
